Flight Simulator - Useable Programs?

Postby The Doctor » Mon Aug 03, 2009 9:32 am

Ok, I know that the Flight Simulator series is an approved AAFC usable simulator or whatever, but what other programs are we actually ALLOWED to use?

I'm currently teaching this as an elective and have become sick of using FS2004 for teaching formation flying, and I've started looking around for other programs, I'd like to use HAWX's free-flight mode to do formation flying, or whatnot, but I have no idea if the AAFC has a hard stance on these games where they have parts with 'combat', and parts with 'no combat', maybe the policy should be a little less harsh when 95% of cadets end up playing war-based games on their PC's at home anyway, I just think the policy I read was a little too harsh on what we can and can't use as teaching material and simulation.

The clarification I had was that Flight sims like that are fine, as they are classified 'G.'

I would be slightly more dubious about Armed assault or Op Flashpoint which are essentially soldier sims with some aircraft bolted on.

If you were looking at HAWX (which isn't exactly that much of a simulator), you may as well take a look at X-Plane, Falcon 4, Wings Over Europe or YS Flight (I'm not sure about WOE but all the others are G rated).

I agree we should be a little less harsh on the whole war based games for teaching, and it's true most cadets go home after parade and play COD 4 on there PC.
If your teaching formations you should deffenently look at Wings over Europe or Wings Ove Vietnam, it has a great AI formation system and uses just about all the aircraft you can think of.
Using Microsofts flight sims can become real annoying to teach formations, I teach formations myself on the internet using FSX.
X plane or Flight Gear won't serve you well for formations, but HAWX might do the trick.
